BOTOX Cosmetic, along with similar products such as Dysport, are now widely available for men and women who want to eliminate forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet. It’s important to remember, however, that BOTOX and Dysport injections work by temporarily immobilizing certain muscles, and are more than a simple day spa treatment.
If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, BOTOX and Dysport injections are offered by San Jose facial plastic surgeon Dr. Chase Lay. Please request a consultation to find out more about both products, or call us at (408) 358-3888 to schedule an appointment.
Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX or Dysport?
The popularity of BOTOX and Dysport injections is based primarily on their cosmetic uses, which include treating:
- Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes
Most men and women are good candidates for either treatment, especially if you are concerned about early signs of aging, but aren’t considering cosmetic surgery.
BOTOX injections are also approved by the FDA for a number of medical conditions. Dr. Lay offers BOTOX injections for the treatment of migraines and tension headaches, as well as to control excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
Botox and Dysport for Hyperhydrosis aka Excessive Sweating
What you need to know
Hyperdydrosis of the underarm and hairline is a common problem amongst patients. Dr. Lay regularly treats this condition with injections of Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin alike. The way in which these neurotoxins work is by limiting the release of neurotransmitters in your nerve endings that cause production of sweat.
The treatment session for the underarm (axilla) is typically a 20 to 30 minute visit with little to no down time. The area of the axilla is examined and marked for treatment and anywhere from 100 to 200 units of Botox is used in total for a satisfactory outcome.
It typically takes 7 to 10 days to see effect and patients report significant reduction in sweating for 5 to 8 months. The more units used the longer the treatment is effectively, typically. There is no real down time but strenuous activities should be avoid that day. You may resume all usual activities the following day.
When it come the treatment itself there is some discomfort from the needle sticks but this is mild. The underarm is marked to show the areas of sweating and area to be injected is iced prior to the injection. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are equally effective and it really depends on patient preference. There is no difference in cost between the three brands of Neurotoxin.
Dr. Lay and his registered nurses offer this hyperhydrosis treatment and it can be delivered efficiently and with very limited discomfort and can be done in less than 15 minutes on patients familiar with the process. For patients who would like to numb topically for 20-30 minutes prior to the procedure you visit would be up to 45 minutes.
Botox and Dysport for Jaw Reduction
Jaw reduction using neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport can be a very effective way to slim a jaw to make a face less square or less round. This facial contouring technique is very safe and effective in patients who are good candidates. Sometimes referred to the “V-line” look for the face many of our patients enjoy the look this injection provides.
The way this works is by causing some atrophy of the masseter of the jaw. Botox and Dysport decrease muscle activity weakening this particular muscle of mastication (chewing) and like any muscle that isn’t being worked it thins or becomes smaller.
The treatment is quick and has almost no down time. The treatment it’s self can take just a few minutes. Usually each side needs a minimum of 20 units to see a reduction in the muscle volume. Most patients use around 30 units per side. In my experience I feel that 40 to 50 units per side is a bit much but some patients do have very strong muscles requiring more units for effective treatment. It takes about one week for the medication to start working and a total of about 3 weeks to actually see reduction in volume. After a month you have a good idea of what your result is.
In some cases if it is a little under treated or the result is too conservative you can always add more units. If you over treat the muscle and the face becomes too slim then you will have this look for several months.
This is a great treatment and patients love it but not everyone is a good candidate. Botox and Dysport are not treatments for facial fullness or heavy jowls related to aging. It is possible to over-inject and cause a patient to look hollow in the face or even create an altered smile. Because of this it’s always a good idea to consult with Dr. Lay before being treated.
Successful treatments can last up to 5-8 months depending on the patient and in some cases a patient can have a great outcome with fewer units with future treatments.
What Should I Expect?
Both BOTOX and Dysport injections are made in areas where they relax specific muscles that can cause wrinkles and other facial lines. It’s important to remember that although treatments are widely available, the effectiveness is determined by the experience of the person doing the injections, not the product itself. Dr. Lay is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon whose understanding of facial anatomy ensures you will receive beautiful, predictable results.
