Anyone who has lived through a sweltering summer can tell you how uncomfortable of a feeling it is to be drenched in sweat, especially in one’s armpits. This type of sweat is embarrassing to say the least. This is all the more pronounced when one suffers from hyperhidrosis. Thankfully, one does not have to suffer continuously from this disorder. At Chase Lay, MD we offer excessive sweating treatments that can bring this disorder under control that are safe and easy to administer.
The first step to receiving treatment for hyperhidrosis is to obtain a proper diagnosis. There are many factors, such an overactive thyroid, that could cause excessive sweating. Others with low blood sugar also may have a propensity for sweating. Doctors may order either a urine test or a blood test in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. In addition, there are a number of sweat tests or skin tests that can also assist in diagnosis.
While there are both surgical options as well as pharmaceutical options available to treat hyperhidrosis, there are also safer and less complicated alternatives. First, the easiest option is a prescription antiperspirant. Instead of the regular antiperspirant that most use, the prescription antiperspirant uses aluminum salts to form a layer that blocks perspiration. For many patients, this method is effective and no further treatment is necessary. Prescription antiperspirants are easy to obtain and, if they are effective, a quick way to address the problem. If prescription antiperspirants do not work, then there are other excessive sweating treatments available.
Often times, prescription antiperspirants are not enough to tackle the problem. We offer BOTOX® and miraDry to take care of hyperhidrosis. BOTOX® has been approved by the FDA since 2004 to treat excessive sweating. The same drug that is able to counteract the effects of aging is also able to prevent excessive sweating. BOTOX® may be injected into the underarm to act against excessive sweating. In addition, BOTOX® can be injected into other areas of the body that may sweat, such as the palms or even the soles of one’s feet. Botox essentially prevents sweating by getting between the body’s message to sweat and the glands.
BOTOX® injections usually prevent sweating for up to one year. Another treatment option is miraDry. This is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment that requires minimal to no downtime and produces permanent results. It is one of the best excessive sweating treatments out there. Treatments usually only take up to an hour, but our team of professionals will determine the plan of action based upon your individual needs.
